BARCELONA – A married couple died and another man was seriously injured Monday in a house fire.
The couple had been arrested ten days before for cocaine dealing but had been given bail, police said.
Authorities said it was unclear if there was any connection between the cause of the fatal blaze and the drugs charges.
Firefighters were called to the flat in Mataro, a town near Barcelona, at about 6.35am.
The 58-year-old husband, named only as Juan M.A. and his wife, Agustina M. L., 52, died from the fumes.
Another man, Alberto V.G., 26, was seriously injured by the fumes, said firefighters. He is not related to the couple.
He was being treated in hospital Monday for his injuries but was in a stable condition.
Police said they raided the house on 13 August and seized a small amount of cocaine.
But Agustina M.L. managed to throw more cocaine into a toilet before the police could stop her.
Authorities said 25 neighbours had to be evacuated during the blaze.
