BILBAO — A town councillor in the Basque country has resigned after becoming the victim of threats.
Adolfo García Herrero, 70, of the Basque Socialist party based in the small town of Elorrio, found his house painted with the words 'Terrorist' and 'You are going to pay for what you have done'.
In the early hours of Monday morning, a gang gathered outside his home and shouted: "Garcia, murderer, fascist, criminal".
Garcia and his family woke-up, frightened and could see a group outside in the road.
After pressure from his family, he resigned the next day.
The local council has condemned the threats.
It is thought the long-serving councillor was forced out by groups of youth activists linked to the Basque terrorist group, ETA.
