ITALY - Despite being invited to ride in the Giro d' Italia only days before it began, Alberto Contador finished Sunday's time trial ahead of his rivals to win Italy's biggest cycling race.

The Tour de France champion started the day with a four-second lead on Riccardo Riccò, but finished around two minutes ahead of the Italian in the overall standings.

Contador is only the second Spaniard to win the Giro after Miguel Indurain won in 1992 and 1993. "Winning makes it worth interrupting my vacation," the rider joked.
