MADRID - Congress speaker Manuel Marín announced Thursday that he will retire from politics at the end of the current legislature in order to devote himself to helping international efforts to combat climate change.

Marín, a 58-year-old Socialist former vice-president of the European Commission, acknowledged that his decision follows a recent meeting with global warming activist and former US Vice President Al Gore during a visit to Spain.

Marín waited to make the announcement until yesterday, when he visited constituents in his native Ciudad Real.

"From now on I will be just another citizen of this city willing to help out, but not on the political frontline," Marín told reporters in a press conference.

He said he is "satisfied" with having remained independent as Congress speaker "during a very difficult legislature" marked by bitter confrontations between left and right, although he admitted that he had sometimes felt "very alone."
