LEON - Spanish police commandos freed four employees of a Deutsche Bank branch in this northern city who had been locked in the vault by two robbers who managed to get away.

After more than five hours of captivity, police freed the employees and ascertained that the two robbers had fled shortly after entering the bank, officials said.

Authorities, who initially thought the robbers were still inside the bank and holding the employees hostage, had police surround the building and cordon off a large area in the downtown area of Leon.

The employees were found to be in good health and told police that two people entered the branch and later locked them in the vault.

Sources said that the robbers took an as-yet-undetermined amount of money from the bank.

The robbers also confiscated the cellphones of the bank employees, thus leaving them unable to call outside for help.

Authorities were notified of the crime by the crew of an armored car that was unable to enter the bank at 2:40 p.m. EFE
