CADIZ — A Spanish patrol boat Tuesday intercepted a vessel carrying four tons of cocaine as part of a multi-national operation, Spanish officials said.

The ship was boarded in international waters near Faro, southern Portugal, at dawn and the five crew members, four Greek and an Italian, were arrested.

The operation was launched at the request of authorities in Greece and also involved help from British police.

The vessel, Africa I, was sailing under a Belize flag. It was under escort to the southern Spanish port of Cadiz where it was to arrive later Tuesday.
