US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday welcomed Cuba's planned release of 52 political prisoners, saying the step by the communist island was overdue but "a positive sign."

"We welcome this. We think that it's a positive sign. It's something that is overdue, but nevertheless very welcome," Clinton told reporters.

Clinton said she spoke late Wednesday by telephone with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, who along with the Roman Catholic Church, helped arrange the deal under which the prisoners would head to his country.
