CUENCA - A judge has sentenced two Civil Guard officers to a fine of EUR 2,000 for turning a blind eye to an illegal prostitution racket in exchange for sexual favours and free drinks from the pimps of the exploited women.
The Cuenca Provincial Court judge convicted both officers of accepting bribes after evidence showed that they had maintained sexual relations for free with dozens of girls at the Flamingo's brothel in the town of Provencio between 2003 and 2004. In exchange, the officers, one of whom is a sergeant, ignored evidence that the women, most of whom were from Paraguay, were being sexually exploited.
A subsequent police investigation revealed that the club owners had enticed the women to come to Spain with promises of cleaning work and then claimed they had run up debts that they would have to repay through prostituting themselves.
After initially being suspended from duty, both officers have returned to active service. They have appealed the sentence.
