MADRID — The police and Civil Guard are to be led by one boss, the government announced on Friday.
Joan Mesquida was named the new head of the joint security service by the minister of the interior Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba.
Mesquida had been the head of the Civil Guard until now.
The cabinet approved the decision to unite both police forces to improve efficiency especially in the fight against terrorism.
It had been a campaign promise of the socialist party before their surprise electoral victory in 2004.
Víctor García Hidalgo, head of the police, had asked Rubalcaba to be allowed to return to the Basque Country where his family live.
