DUBLIN - Irish customs officers have seized 4.8 million contraband cigarettes worth EUR 1.4 million smuggled from the Canary islands via the Spanish mainland and France.

The Palace brand cigarettes were found concealed behind a load of frozen french fries in a container lorry that arrived at the Rosslare ferryport in the southeast of the country.

The load was to be delivered to an address in the west of Ireland, and customs officers say the investigation into the seizure is continuing.

Two people from Northern Ireland accompanying the load were released after questioning, but the truck and refrigerated trailer were also seized.

"The cigarettes originated in the Canaries and the load was picked up in Malaga, Spain. They arrived in Rosslare by ferry from Cherbourg, France," customs said.

The cigarettes represented a potential loss of tax revenue of EUR 1.2m according to customs.
