BEIJING  - China is loaning a pair of pandas to Spain, the Foreign Ministry announced Thursday, a symbol of goodwill capping a state visit by Spanish King Juan Carlos.

"The pair of pandas will be the envoy of the Chinese people," Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said at a regular news conference. "We hope the zoo of Spain can take good care of the pair of pandas because they are our national treasure."

Qin did not provide any details of the deal, announced the day before King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia wrap up a five-day visit to China.

Unique to China, pandas are frequently used by the government as a symbol of goodwill. Loans have been made to the United States and other countries to mark major breakthroughs in relations.

A spokesman for the State Forestry Administration, which oversees China's panda breeding program, said he had no details except that the bears will come from Chengdu, the capital of western China's Sichuan province.
