BARCELONA - Cannabis will be available on prescription from hospitals and selected chemists later this year in the Barcelona area.

The regional government, or Generalitat, agreed with the Ministry of Health to prescribe the drug in four hospitals and 60 pharmacies in the city, the first place in Spain to do this.

The drug will be available to patients with multiple sclerosis, cancer and chronic nervous diseases.

The agreement will be formally signed in the next few weeks and the drug will be available from the middle of this year.

Cannabis will only be prescribed to patients who have not responded to other drugs or who have persistent pain caused by their conditions.

Officially, using cannabis is illegal in Spain, but it is widely smoked in many public places.
