MADRID - Real Madrid chairman Ramon Calderon was briefly held by security personnel as he passed through a New York airport in an apparent case of mistaken identity, the club said Tuesday.

Calderon, travelling on private business with his wife, was detained for two hours after an airport official spotted that police had blacklisted an individual sharing his surname.

The Real boss's wife is reported to have called Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba, but the matter was resolved without his involvement and Calderon was soon on his way.

According to Real, the incident was due to "the typical security measures which have been stepped up in recent days due to the U.N. summit and President George Bush's visit to New York".

The club added Calderon had received an apology for the misunderstanding.
