17 November 2006, ALBACETE — Police arrested 37 businessmen linked to a multi-million euro human trafficking operation to smuggle illegal immigrant workers into Spain.

ALBACETE — Police arrested 37 businessmen linked to a multi-million euro human trafficking operation to smuggle illegal immigrant workers into Spain.

They were among 50 people detained near Albacete and Cuenca on Friday.

Police sources said the number of illegal immigrants involved was above 500, most of them Moroccans. 

They paid up to EUR 9,000 to work in Spain's black economy.

The gang was organised in Villarrobledo, near Albacete and San Clemente, near Cuenca.

There were 13 gang members arrested, some of them Spanish, others Moroccan.

The gang were said to have made EUR 4.5 million.

It was believed the illegal workers were doing mostly manual work.
