JAEN- A court jailed a businessman for two years for celebrating his birthday by inviting his employees to partake of a cake laced with marijuana.

The businessman, Enrique F.P., was convicted of a crime against the public health, according to the text of the judicial ruling to which Efe gained access.

In addition to the prison term and a small fine, the court also awarded damages to two female guests who became ill after ingesting the cake.

The incident occurred on July 14, 2005, when the accused invited his workers to dinner and then later they continued the party at his house, where he offered them the cake seasoned with pot.

In the trial, the accused stated that during the meal he told his guests what was inside the cake, a version that the two plaintiffs denied.

They said they noticed that something was wrong when they began to feel bad and the rest of the guests "laughed when we said how bad we were feeling, telling us (our feelings) were psychological."

When the two women left the party, their symptoms began to get worse to the point where one of them approached a police patrol car to ask for help and they were taken to a hospital where doctors confirmed that they had both ingested a large amount of pot.

Also implicated in the case is a Colombian woman who carried out domestic tasks at the businessman's house, it being she who - allegedly - baked the cake.

The domestic worker did not show up on the day of the trial and an arrest order has been issued for her.
