ALICANTE — A school has opened an investigation after a teenage pupil committed suicide by jumping off a bridge.
The parents of the 16-year-old have claimed that she was a victim of bullies at the Sagrada Familia de Elda college in the province of Alicante.
She threw herself from a bridge in the town of Elda last week and died from her injuries.
Ignacio Bleda, director of the collage, told a press conference the girl had not been a victim of a campaign of bullying.
But Bleda admitted the teenager, identified only as C.C.G., had been attacked by three other pupils last December.
He said this had been a one-off incident and she had not been constantly bullied by other pupils.
A cousin of the girl, Maria Rosa Cuesta, said she had told her family that she "could not stand the situation at the college any longer".
But Cuesta did not go into specifics.
The head of police in Elda, Ignacio Gomez, confirmed there had been a complaint to police last December about an attack on their daughter.
But there had not been any other complaints.
The case follows the trial of eight students in the Basque Country earlier this month, who were convicted of playing a part in the death of a teenage boy who killed himself after a year-long campaign of insults and attacks.
Jokin Ceberio, 14, killed himself in September last year in Hondarribia, in the Basque Country, north-west Spain.
