MADRID - Prince Kardam, the heir to the Bulgarian throne, remained in a serious but stable condition in a Madrid hospital on Sunday, two days after he and his wife suffered a car accident near the Spanish capital.
A representative of the 12 de Octubre Hospital said Kardam, the eldest son of King Simeon of Bulgaria, is expected to remain in intensive care for three or four more days as he recovers from injuries to his head and hands sustained in the crash.
Doctors said they may have no option but to amputate two of his fingers. Kardam's Spanish wife, Miriam de Ungría, is also recovering in the same hospital after fracturing her elbow.
The crash occurred shortly before 3pm on Friday when the couple's Jaguar car came off the road on the N-I highway near the town of El Molar north of Madrid. The vehicle flipped over and struck a tree, coming to rest about 10 metres from the wall of a house.
The couple were visited over the weekend by other members of the Bulgarian royal family, including Kardam's Spanish mother, Margarita Gómez-Acebo, and his three siblings, princes Kubrat, Kyril and Konstantin.
