MADRID – Thousands of expats living in sunny Spain are claiming winter fuel benefit from the UK, it was reported this week.
The British daily newspaper The Telegraph reported that as much as £6.3 million (EUR 9.1 million) has been handed out to pensioners living in Spain since 2002-3 – in a total of 31,000 payments.
Even though Brits may be living abroad, they are entitled to 'export' the winter fuel benefit – a £200-a-time payment (EUR 289) to help pensioners heat their homes.
The Liberal Democrats' work and pensions spokesman is calling on the government to stop "quite affluent pensioners living abroad" in "quite warm Mediterranean climates" from receiving help.
However, Britain's department for work and pensions has stated there are no plans to review the fuel payments system for Brits living abroad.
