SAN SEBASTIAN – A Briton has been detained while trying to cross the Spanish border into France with 47 kilograms of cocaine hidden in his luxury automobile, authorities said on Monday.

The arrest occurred last Friday after the 44-year-old suspect, identified only by his initials A.W.N., tried to turn back at the Biriatou border crossing in northern Spain when he saw police.

When officers stopped the vehicle, they noticed that the driver was very nervous. They searched his AUDI A-6 and found the drugs in a cleverly-disguised hidden compartment.

Authorities said the 47 kilograms of cocaine were divided into 43 packages.

A police spokesman said investigators were trying to ascertain the origin of the drugs and whether more people were involved in the smuggling attempt.
