MADRID - The British theatre company Cheek By Jowl, which is currently in Madrid to perform Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida, is puzzled at diverging reports relating to the mugging of one of its members in the capital on Friday.

Actor David Collings, 68, was shoved by some young thugs who took his wallet Friday night while on his way back to Hotel Gran Legazpi after having a drink with friends.

Although the British company's producer has stated that Collings did not suffer any physical assault, and performed the play the next day at the Matadero theatre, other sources contend that he sustained a "tremendous beating" and that the police response was lax.

The hotel's version of events is that the actor showed up at the lobby Friday night "after being physically assaulted, and the person in charge of the hotel decided to provide personal assistance because the client wished to proceed with discretion".

A hotel spokesperson also said that the police was called in "for security reasons," even though Collings declined to file a complaint.
