MENORCA - A British pensioner has died on holiday in Menorca a day after she was mugged on the Spanish island.
The BBC reported Marie Leighton, 71, from Coleraine, Northern Ireland, had been on holiday with her daughter, Alison, and two of her grandchildren.
Mrs Leighton was mugged on Saturday and the following day, it was reported she suffered chest pains. She died later.
SDLP councillor Gerry McLoughlin who knows the family well said Mrs Leighton was a very kind woman and the community was devastated by her death.
"It is very, very sad because Marie was a unique human being. (She had) a kind word for everybody. Everybody's trouble was Marie's trouble," he said.
Mr McLoughlin said he had spoke to Mrs Leighton the day before she went on holiday.
He said she had not been ill.
