A British father and his adult son have drowned in the sea while on holiday on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain, a British embassy spokeswoman said Wednesday.

The accident happened Tuesday at the Playa del Tesorillo in the Granada region, she said, without providing further details.

"We are in touch with local authorities and are providing consular assistance," the spokeswoman said.

Spanish media reported that the son, aged 45, dived into the water to try to rescue his 74-year-old father who had got into difficulties in rough waters.

Witnesses told Spanish television that a red flag was flying at the beach, meaning the water was closed to the public because of high waves or strong currents.

Two youths rushed into the water to try to save the pair but also got into trouble. One struggled to make it back to rocks while the other survived by hanging on to a floating platform out at sea, the reports said.
