Britain wants to see ETA's words translated into action
Britain said on Friday that if Basque militants ETA back up their promise to end attacks with actions then it would be an important step towards peace.
"If words are put into action ETA's announcement yesterday of an end to violence will be welcome," said a spokesman for Prime Minister David Cameron's office.
"A clear and irrevocable rejection of violence in all forms, and a commitment to peaceful and democratic means, will be an important step.
"This will be gladly received not just by those who have suffered for so long from this violence, but to all around the world who believe in the power of democratic politics."
ETA announced on Thursday that it was ending its separatist campaign of bombing and shootings targeting the Spanish government and its representatives.
