SAN SEBASTIAN - A bomb inside an electrical pylon exploded Wednesday in the northern Spanish city of Irun, near the French border, causing extensive damage but no injuries, officials said.

Judging by the sophistication of the explosive, officials told EFE news agency the attack was not mere street violence and may have been the work of the Basque terrorist group ETA.

The blast caused extensive damage to the pylon, located on a highway connecting Irun with neighbouring Bera de Bidasoa.

ETA unleashed a wave of violence in July and August, setting off nine bombs at tourist destinations in northern Spain.

The attacks in the Galician cities of Santiago de Compostela and La Coruña, and the neighbouring regions of Cantabria and Asturias, caused structural damage.

Five people received minor injuries.
