BARCELONA — Police found the body of an elderly woman who had died at least four years before.
The corpse, discovered on 20 September, did not show any signs of violence and a post-mortem revealed Carmen Serrano had died from natural causes.
Neighbours said Serrano had lived in the same flat for 30 years, but had not got on well with her neighbours.
However, five months ago, one neighbour called police to report that Serrano was missing.
Officers visited the apartment but left when nobody answered the door.
Serrano had lived without water and electricity for years and owed the tenants' association EUR 6,000.
But she had seven siblings and was married and had a son.
Police checks revealed her husband and son live in Jaen in Andalusia and had been looking for her in London, where she worked as a nurse until 1972.
Her corpse was first found by a relative who claimed to have inherited the apartment in Sant Feliu de Llobregat, a small town near Barcelona.
