MADRID — Spain's bishops have called on Roman Catholics "to oppose clearly and decisively" plans by the country's Socialist government to legalise same-sex marriages.

A spokesman for the bishops said a government bill which is set to become law in the summer, assuming it wins senate approval, was "a backward step on the path of civilisation".

The bishops said in a statement that the bill, adopted last month and which would in future allow unlimited adoption by gay couples, "contradicts reason and morality".

The embryonic legislation would be one of the most liberal of its kind in Europe.
