MADRID — Real Madrid and England star David Beckham will hit the silver screen next month as one of the stars of Real Madrid: The Movie.
The film, which is designed to promote the football club as a world brand, features a Japanese fan who is obsessed by the midfielder.
The EUR6m film tells five different simultaneous stories of people in four continents around the world trying to understand the power and passion which the club inspires.
It follows the adventures of a teacher in Madrid who is not interested in football, the obsessed Japanese fan, a footballer in New York who admires striker Ronaldo, a Senegalese boy who idolises midfielder Zinedine Zidane and another admirer of centre-forward Raul in Venezuela.
Dreamed up by Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, it is designed to show the club as a 'world brand' by demonstrating the reach its name has beyond Europe.
Perez said: "Cinema and football share the same ground in the emotions so a club like Real Madrid had to have a film."
Beckham is seen in the film as a "post-modern" character in an effort, it is assumed, to show Real Madrid is a very 21st Century club.
Directed by Real Madrid-obsessed Borja Manso, the film will be released in Spain on 26 August.
