MADRID — The leader of the banned Basque political party Batasuna has been jailed for a year for calling King Juan Carlos "the chief of the torturers".

Arnaldo Otegi, who is head of the political wing of the Basque terrorist group ETA, made the reference to the monarch in 2003.

Spain's Supreme Court condemned Otegi to a year behind bars, revoking an earlier decision of the High Court in the Basque Country.

The High Court said in March Otegi's comments were "offensive" but were an expression of free speech.

He made the comments during a press conference before the planned visit of King Juan Carlos to the Basque Country.

Otegi was referring to a similar reference made by the editor of the pro-Basque newspaper, Egunkaria, Martxelo Otamendi.

Otegi said the comments were not meant to be offensive to the king.

He is to appeal against the sentence.
