BILBAO-The Basque regional election campaign has got underway with the nationalists expected to hold onto power.
The Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) appears to be facing nothing more than a vote of confidence in how they are running one of Spain´s richest regions.
Recent polls have said the PNV, lead by Basque premier Juan Jose Ibarretxe, will win between 35 and 37 percent of the vote on 17 April.
The left-wing group, made up of the coalition of two parties, EB and IU, is expected to gain between one and four percent of the vote.
The opposition Socialists are expected to gain up to 19 percent of the popular vote.
The poll comes after the outlawing of ETA´s political wing Batasuna and another party which was said to be simply a front for the terrorists.
It also comes after the rejection of Ibarretxe´s plan for greater independence for the Basque Country by Madrid.
The Basque premier claims the plan would stop ETA´s violence.
