MADRID - Spanish giants Barcelona announced on Tuesday that midfielder Yaya Toure could be out of action for up to a month because of a slipped disc.

Toure, 24, suffered the injury in Sunday's 1-2 defeat at home to Villarreal, a defeat which leaves Barca eight points behind Liga leaders Real Madrid.

The Barca doctors have said that the injury does not require surgery, but would need a period of recuperation before he would be able to play again.

No official timescale has been put on the recuperation process, but reports in the Spanish media have suggested that Toure could be out for up to a month.

The Ivory Coast World Cup player had been complaining of back pains since his return from the African Cup of Nations.

Barca already have a lengthy injury list, including Albert Jorquera, Oleguer Presas, Carles Puyol, Rafa Marquez, Deco and Lionel Messi.
