MADRID - Barcelona have reneged on their agreement to sign Ezequiel Garay from Racing Santander, according to the digital version of Marca on Thursday.

In February, Barca apparently agreed to pay Santander EUR 14 million for the Argentine defender, who was going to join Barca in June on a five-year contract.

Now Marca claims that Barca have backed out of the deal, partly because of the knee injury that will keep Garay out until the end of the season.

Garay, 21, sustained the injury in the King's Cup semi-final which Santander lost against Getafe.

Marca claims that Real Madrid are also interested in Garay with his surges upfield and his set-piece goals.

Santander are currently joint fourth in La Liga - level on 50 points with Atletico Madrid - their highest ever placing at this stage of the season, and keen to get into Europe for the first time.
