BILBAO — Arnaldo Otegi, the leader of Batasuna, the banned political wing of the Basque terrorist organisation ETA, is expected to leave prison shortly.

His lawyer said bail money of EUR 250,000, set by a judge last week, had been raised and Otegi would leave the Madrid prison where has been held.

Otegi, who is accused of ordering a series of violent street protests last month, is said to be a key player in the future peace process in the Basque Country, after the permanent ceasefire called by ETA on 22 March.

His expected release comes after Batasuna said it would abide by a judge's ruling which banned a planned meeting on Sunday.

A judge said the meeting could not go ahead as the organisation is still illegal.

But the response from Batasuna is said to be an 'act of goodwill' made in the hope that it will be legalised in the near future.
