MALAGA  — Spanish actor and director Antonio Banderas said his parents were the 'secret formula' for his success.

Banderas, who was named a favourite son of the southern city of Malaga, his hometown, dedicated the honour to his parents.

He said they had "formed (his) personality in an invisible, quiet way."

The Hollywood star said: "To be recognized in your city is an award that takes on a special significance," Banderas said, adding that he was "grateful and overwhelmed" at the honour.

He added that he felt "the weight of a certain responsibility ... (and) fear of not living up to the expectations of the people who have placed confidence in me, because at times I have my bad days."

The actor devoted a large part of the post-award ceremony press conference to answering questions about his next big film project – 'El camino de los ingleses' (The English Road) - his second work in the director's chair.

The film is based on the prize-winning novel of the same name by screenwriter Antonio Soler, who is also from Malaga.

Shooting will commence in Malaga on 21 November, will take a break at Christmas and will resume on 9 January.

Banderas said that filming is expected to wrap up "at the end of February or beginning of March".
