A woman gave birth to a son on the platform of a suburban train station in Madrid after her baby decided to make an early entrance, emergency services officials and media reports said Wednesday.

The 35-year-old Angolan woman, in her ninth month of pregnancy, was waiting with her husband at the Asamblea de Madrid Entrevias station east of the Spanish capital on Tuesday evening when she went into labour, an emergency services spokesman said.

By the time the ambulance arrived the baby boy had already been born. Doctors cut the umbilical cord and took the mother and her newborn to hospital where both were said to be doing well, he added.

Images broadcast on private television Antena 3 showed emergency services workers clad in yellow coats carrying the baby wrapped in a blue blanket inside the ambulance.

The station said the boy, whom she named Lucas, was the woman's third son.
