BARCELONA-Spanish police have arrested the parents of a two-month-old girl who allegedly suffered a series of serious injuries at their hands.

The child, who was not named, had three broken ribs, hematomas in a number of parts of her body, blood haemorrhages in both eyes and other head injuries.

The baby's father Nilton Vladimir Z.V. , 30, and her mother, Jane Georgina M.S.C, 27, who are both Peruvian, appeared in court accused of battering the baby.

Hospital medics called in police when they were examining the child in a Barcelona hospital.

The child is having surgery for her injuries.

Doctors said the child had suffered a series of injuries over a sustained period of time.

These included a fractured femur which had not been treated and a fractured cranium.

The parents did not give the hospital authorities reasonable explanations for the injuries which led doctors to call in police.

The father has been held in custody and the mother was given bail.

The parents do not have legal status and could be deported if found guilty of the offences.
