BARCELONA - Former Prime Minister José María Aznar is like a "Chinese vase," something that was once useful but should now be put to one side and handled with care, Montserrat Nebrera, an outspoken Catalan lawmaker from Aznar's own Popular Party (PP), suggested Thursday.

Nebrera, a rising star in the PP's Catalan wing, has become the latest party official to call for collective self-criticism following the PP's defeat in the 9 March general election - and she did so in no uncertain terms. Speaking on Catalonia's TV-3 television channel, she urged the party to stop living under Aznar's shadow and to rid itself of leaders who have been "rejected" by the public, notably secretary general Ángel Acebes and former Congress spokesman Eduardo Zaplana.

The only top party official spared her wrath was Mariano Rajoy, who she applauded for staying on as PP president despite the election defeat. Nonetheless, she argued that the PP needs to undergo a complete "renewal" in the wake of the poll, in which it faired particularly poorly in Catalonia.

Her comments were immediately criticised by her superiors.

"Instead of talking to newspapers and talk shows, if she has something to say she should talk directly to the party leaders," said Xavier García Albiol, the deputy secretary general of the Catalan Popular Party.
