21 June 2006, MADRID — The former Spanish prime minister José María Aznar has been named a director of News Corporation, the group owned by media mogul Rupert Murdoch, it was reported on Wednesday.

MADRID — The former Spanish prime minister José María Aznar has been named a director of News Corporation, the group owned by media mogul Rupert Murdoch, it was reported on Wednesday.

Aznar, whose Popular Party government lost the last general election in a shock defeat, has become the first 'non-Anglo Saxon' to sit on the board of the company, the news agency Europa Press reported. 

Aznar took part in the first meeting of the board on Tuesday.

News Corporation, which is said to be worth USD 55 billion and has annual gross  income of USD 25 billion, is based in the US, UK, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Pacific.

The multinational owns, among other media holdings, the film company 20th Century Fox, Fox TV in the US, Sky TV in the UK, the  British newspaper 'The Sunday Times', the US daily 'The New York Post' and the publishing house Harper Collins.
