MADRID — A 34-year-old navy sub-lieutenant has been appointed Spain's first female warship captain, the defence ministry said.

Yanez Gonzalez-Irun, a navy officer's daughter who was also the first woman
to complete military training, will assume command of her naval patrol vessel
in September.

The Spanish armed forces began allowing women to join up in 1988 — at first
only in joint services such as healthcare — before opening all sections in 1990.

The appointment was seen as a victory for women in Spain's traditionally macho society.
