BARCELONA-A Spanish manufacturer has designed the prototype of a washing machine designed to ensure that it is not always the woman in the household who uses it.

The Servicio Estacion company said the machine uses a fingerprint-based activation system that prevents it from being put into operation twice in a row by the same person.

This will ensure the men in the house will have to put the washing in the machine and turn it on.

The designers of the machine, which will be unveiled in Barcelona later this month, said they hope to contribute "to doing away with the custom prevailing in many families that has the woman always being the one using the washing machine."

The described the invention as "an equal-opportunity washing machine" and have tentatively named the model "Your Turn."

The announcement came after research found women in Spanish households still did the majority of the work.
