MADRID -Firefighters in Spain brought a huge forest fire under control Friday after it destroyed more than 7,700 hectares in the southern province of Jaen in Andalusia, (18,000 acres), local authorities said.

The fire was started Thursday in the town of Aldeaquemada before spreading to four neighbouring towns, Jose Alvarez, the mayor of one of the towns affected, said.

More than 200 firefighters, backed by 25 aircraft, were battling to put out the fire at one stage.

Between 27 July and 3 August, the worst forest fire to hit Spain in 13 years scorched 28,000 hectares (69,000 acres) in two other provinces in Andalusia and killed two people.
