VALENCIA — A man was arrested for starting a fire which destroyed nearly 2,000 hectares of forest in the Valencia region.
The 22-year-old, who is a local, allegedly set fire to papers in a bin near a campsite, which then caught alight surrounding trees in the La Safor region.
After four days, the fire was finally brought under control on Monday night.
Resources had to be diverted on Monday after a second fire started nearby in Vilamarxant, probably caused by a group of teenagers setting off fireworks.
This was brought under control by Monday night, but by then it had destroyed 68 hectares of land.
The man arrested in connection with the blaze in La Safor was expected to appear in court on Wednesday.
