SAN SEBASTIAN-An army sergeant has been shot and badly wounded after a confrontation with police.
The man was hit twice after shots were fired at the entrance to the Club Nautico in central San Sebastian in the Basque Country.
A Guardia Civil officer fired the shots.
The army sergeant has undergone surgery after being hit in the chest, kidneys and the right arm.
The incident happened in a disco called La Kabutzia in the Club Nautico while the army sergeant was with three other army officers.
Police said the exact circumstances have not been established but it appears an argument happened in the early hours.
The soldiers became engaged in a row with police and a shoot-out started.
It is the second incident involving soldiers based in San Sebastián this year.
On 13 January, two soldiers were arrested after an incident involving a representative of the left-wing political party Zutik and another person from the gay and lesbian organisation Ehgam.
The Ministry of Defence has opened its own investigation into what happened.
