PAMPLONA — Police raided a press conference given by the banned political wing of the Basque terrorist group ETA.
The raid was carried out on the orders of high court judge Fernando Grande-Marlaska, to force Batasuna to comply with a judicial order issued in January which prohibits public meetings of the banned political party.
Five minutes after the start, police interrupted the press conference to present two Batasuna members with a letter informing them they were contradicting the judicial order.
Pernando Barrena, a member of Batasuna who was leading the press conference, said: "This is an act which does not correspond to the political environment in which we are living in this country."
After the press conference was stopped by police, the two Batasuna members shouted: "Gora Euskal Herria Askatuta" (Long live free a Basque Country).
Ángel Acebes, secretary general of the conservative Popular Party applauded the decision to raid the press conference, saying it would "maintain the decency and the dignity of the State".
Batasuna was banned by a supreme court order in 2003 because of its links to ETA.
