BILBAO - Civil Guard officers arrested two suspected members of Basque terrorist group ETA on Sunday when they were pulled over at a routine checkpoint in a rural area of the Basque province of Guipúzcoa.

The suspects, who were armed but did not resist arrest, have been identified as Igor Portu Jaurarena, 29, and Martín Sarasola, 30. Both are known to police as ETA supporters, and investigators suspect they may have been planning to rebuild the group's logistical operations in the Basque Country in order to supply terrorist cells.

Each of the suspects was carrying a revolver wrapped in cellophane that had apparently been acquired recently. They have been linked to Gorka Lupiañez, a suspected ETA member, who was arrested last month in the neighbouring province of Vizcaya. Last month ETA killed two Spanish Civil Guard agents in France.
