MADRID – A lawyer wanted by Spain for his involvement in a sex-video scandal was free on Thursday less than 24 hours after being arrested in Buenos Aires.

José Emilion Rodríguez Menéndez has been wanted by the Spanish courts since last June after being sentenced to two years in prison for the distribution of a video showing a Guinean woman having sex with the editor-in-chief of the newspaper El Mundo, Pedro J Ramirez.

Menéndez had unsuccessfully attempted to have his prison sentence changed to a fine.

When he was found to have left the country, Spain issued an international order for his search and capture. Police traced him after discovering the lawyer had been visiting Argentinia since 1994.

On Tuesday night, Interpol officers arrested Menéndez in a luxurious restaurant in the Argentinian capital, where he was having dinner with his wife Vanessa whom he married in May.

He was taken to a prison unit in Buenos Aires and appeared before the federal judge Maria Servini de Cubría the same day and on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Spain petitioned the Argentinian court to extradite Menéndez, but on Wednesday he was freed.
