MADRID - The archbishop of the northern Spanish city of Burgos, Francisco Gil Hellin, has told his congregation he would call on the Holy See to beatify Pope John Paul II.

Archbishop Hellin praised the pontiff's stance "against Nazism, Communism
and materialist totalitarianism" during his 27 years as leader of the Roman
Catholic Church to which most Spaniards profess allegiance.

Thousands of worshippers across Spain poured into cathedrals on Tuessday
evening to celebrate eucharistic mass and remember the third-longest serving
pope in history.
