MADRID – Mallorca is to host the first meeting of a Spanish initiative to tackle world terrorism, it was reported on Tuesday.
Prime minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero made the announcement before heading to Lanzarote for the start of his summer holidays with his family.
Zapatero is to stay in 'La Mareta' in Costa Teguise, a luxurious retreat where the royal family has also holidayed.
Yesterday, the PM met with the king in the Palacio de Marivent in Palma where he scheduled the first meeting of his 'Alliance of Civilisations' for November. The project, which won the backing of British PM Tony Blair last week, and in which Turkey has also been heavily involved, is to unite Muslim and non-Muslim nations to discuss the problem of Islamic extremism and world terrorism.
"Mallorca is a good place for an attractive project in which Spain is going to put in a lot of effort," said Zapatero.
The meeting would take place shortly before the Barcelona summit on Euro-Mediterranean dialogue, he added.
