MARBELLA — An Italian drug dealer died after being shot in broad daylight in Marbella on Spain's Costa del Sol.
The sixty-two-year-old, who was named only as Vincenzo M, was shot in the throat late on Tuesday night.
He was taken to hospital but died of his injuries.
He was shot by a gunman riding on the back of a motorbike driven by another person.
The victim was well-known to the police who said he had been involved in trafficking cannabis between Morocco and Europe.
The shooting happened in front of an urbanization in Marbella called La Esmeralda, 200 metres from the Hotel Coral Beach.
Hours before the shooting, Víctor García Hidalgo, the director general of police, announced in Malaga the launch of a major offensive against organised crime in the Costa del Sol.
The police will be supported by a specially organised group from the Armed Forces.
The last shooting in Marbella, a popular, up-market resort town, happened on 4 December when an Italian hairdresser and a boy were gunned down in a hail of machine-gun bullets.
They were caught in the cross-fire as three gunmen tried to kill another man.
No arrests have been made in either murder case.
