BARCELONA — Anarchists have been blamed for a bomb attack at the Italian Institute in Barcelona.
One police officer was hurt and bomb squad dog was killed in the blast.
The bomb, hidden in a coffee pot which was hanging at the entrance to the building, did not cause great damage.
Police said they believed the attack could have been carried out by Italian anarchists in reprisal for a series of arrests in Italy in recent weeks.
The blast happened at just alter 8am after an anonymous warning call to police about a bomb in the entrance to the building in the centre of the city.
The police officer who was inspecting the area in which the bomb was located was slightly injured.
The Labrador dog from the Tedax bomb squad was thrown five metres in the air and died from its injuries.
A spokesman for the Italian Institute said that for some time they had been receiving threats from anarchist groups as had the Italian consulate.
Italians form the largest foreign European population in Barcelona.
The city receives more visitors from Italy during the summer months.
