MADRID — Oscar-winning Spanish film director Pedro Almodovar has spoken about his new film which stars Penelope Cruz and Carmen Maura.

'Volver' (Return) will begin shooting in July.

Almodovar said that preparing for the work ahead has "once again (given me) the sensation of having a story, fable, treasure and secret in my hands" which he is anxious to tell.

'Volver'  he says on his website — where he has included a filming diary for the project — "talks about death".

But he adds the film is "more than about death itself. The screenplay speaks about the rich culture of death in the La Mancha region where I was born.

"Regarding the mood, it's nothing tragic. It's about how several female characters from different generations handle themselves within that culture".

Almodovar's 2002 film 'Talk to Her' won an Academy Award for best original screenplay , three years after his film 'All About My Mother' took home the foreign-language Oscar.

His last film was 'Bad Education', a movie about a young man haunted by an abusive priest from his childhood.
